Order of David Rosenfelt Books
Imagine a man who’s mastered the art of weaving murder, courtroom drama, and dog rescue into page-turning mysteries — then imagine him doing it all while refusing to take himself too seriously. Welcome to the paradoxical world of David Rosenfelt, the author who can make you laugh mid-murder case and cry over a golden retriever in the very next breath.
Born on December 24, 1949, in Paterson, New Jersey, Rosenfelt didn’t set out to become a novelist. In fact, if you’d asked a young David what he wanted to be, “the guy who writes courtroom dramas about wisecracking lawyers and dog heroes” probably wouldn’t have topped the list. Yet here he is — the acclaimed author of more than 30 bestselling novels, most notably the Andy Carpenter series, which has amassed a cult following for its blend of humor, heart, and legal thrills.
Before he ever cracked the spine of a published book with his name on it, David Rosenfelt graduated from New York University, majoring in — what else? — business administration. A curious choice for a man whose future career would be steeped in legal drama and canine compassion. But that business savvy came in handy later when Rosenfelt pivoted from corporate America to the dog-eat-dog world of publishing.
After NYU, Rosenfelt embarked on a career in the movie and television industry, eventually working as marketing president for Tri-Star Pictures. Yes, the same Tri-Star known for flying Pegasus logos and blockbuster films. He was the guy behind the strategy of getting butts in seats, but even then, his passion leaned more toward storytelling than ticket sales.
Eventually, Hollywood grew tired — or perhaps, he just got tired of Hollywood. What didn’t grow tired, however, was his love for dogs and crime fiction. These two obsessions collided with delightful irony when Rosenfelt took up the pen and introduced the world to Andy Carpenter, a defense attorney with a sharp tongue, a soft spot for dogs, and an uncanny knack for stumbling into murder cases that would make even John Grisham sweat.
What sets Rosenfelt apart isn’t just his legal plots or plot twists — it’s his tone. Sarcastic, self-aware, and consistently funny, he writes as though he’s winking at the reader from behind the pages. His books never feel like they’re preaching or posturing; instead, they feel like a smart, hilarious friend taking you on a ride through crime scenes, courtrooms, and dog kennels.
But perhaps the most heartwarming chapter of David Rosenfelt’s life isn’t found in fiction at all — it's in dog rescue. Together with his wife, he founded the Tara Foundation, a rescue organization that has saved over 4,000 dogs, many of them elderly or disabled. If that doesn’t melt your heart, nothing will. His memoir Dogtripping tells the story of transporting 25 dogs across the country when he moved from California to Maine. It’s as chaotic, hilarious, and touching as it sounds — a true nonfiction gem that lets readers peek behind the curtain of the man who writes dog-loving lawyers so well because… he is one, in spirit at least.
As of today, David Rosenfelt is alive and writing — thank goodness. He’s not slowing down anytime soon, much to the relief of mystery fans and dog lovers alike. His bibliography continues to grow each year, bringing more legal puzzles, more canine companions, and more reasons to laugh out loud while turning pages at 2 a.m.
So, if you’ve never picked up a Rosenfelt book, brace yourself. You’re about to enter a world where murder is puzzling, the legal system is bendy, the jokes are relentless, and the dogs always steal the show. And if you think you can read just one, Andy Carpenter would like a word with you — and maybe a tennis ball too.
