Order of Anne Perry Books
If there ever was an author whose life read like one of her own dark, intricately-plotted novels, it would be Anne Perry. Known to the world for her chilling Victorian-era mysteries, Perry’s real-life story was equally dramatic—filled with secrets, redemption, and a pen that never stopped bleeding ink or truth.
Born Juliet Marion Hulme on October 28, 1938, in Blackheath, London, Perry was not always destined for literary fame. In fact, long before the world knew her as the queen of historical crime fiction, she was already infamous for one of the most sensational murder cases in 20th-century New Zealand history. At just 15 years old, Juliet (later Anne Perry) was convicted of murder—yes, murder—alongside her best friend, Pauline Parker, for bludgeoning Parker’s mother to death in 1954. The case shocked the nation and inspired Peter Jackson’s critically acclaimed film Heavenly Creatures decades later. But this is where the irony begins.
Following her release from prison, Juliet changed her name to Anne Perry and went on to rebuild her life far away from the shadows of her past. And how did she do it? By crafting stories soaked in moral conflict, justice, and the darkness lurking beneath society’s prim and proper façade.
Educated in part through self-study, Perry moved across the globe—from New Zealand to the United States, and eventually to Scotland—where she fully embraced the quiet, disciplined life of a writer. And what a writer she became.
With a literary career spanning over four decades, Anne Perry didn’t just dabble in murder mysteries—she mastered them. Her first novel, The Cater Street Hangman, published in 1979, introduced the brilliant Inspector Thomas Pitt and his fiercely intelligent wife, Charlotte. The book wasn’t just a success—it launched Perry into the literary stratosphere, followed closely by the equally loved William Monk series, which explored themes of memory loss, justice, and personal redemption.
She went on to write over 75 novels, selling more than 25 million copies worldwide, and earning places on bestseller lists across the globe. Her books were celebrated not just for their gripping plots, but for their deep psychological insight and rich historical detail. You could almost smell the fog rolling over 19th-century London as you turned each page.
Despite her grim beginning, Perry became a devout Christian, often speaking about the theme of atonement and the moral weight of choices in her fiction. Her fans admired her resilience, her sharp mind, and her dedication to truth—however difficult it might be to face.
She passed away on April 10, 2023, at the age of 84 in Los Angeles, California, leaving behind not just a towering legacy of fiction but also one of the most curious and ironic personal journeys in literary history.
Because here’s the twist that still haunts and fascinates readers: the woman who gave us dozens of tales about murder, morality, and Victorian repression… was once a teenage killer herself.
And yet—perhaps it’s exactly that experience, that brush with ultimate darkness, which made her stories so palpably real. Each line she wrote, each mystery she penned, carried with it an intimate understanding of guilt, grief, and the human capacity for both cruelty and compassion.
Anne Perry didn’t just write crime fiction—she lived through it.
